Top Hidden Treasures

July 5, 2017

Hi there darlings! I hope you’ve discovered two of my posts on Jajce (Bosnia and Herzegovina: Nr. 1 & Nr. 2), which was selected by Mastercard as one of the “Top Hidden Treasures” you should explore this year. What does that mean? Well, the “hidden treasures” are beautiful touristic destinations and true secret gems all around the Europe, which deserve so much more attention. When in Greece – you don’t need to see only Athens. When in Italy  – why does it have to be Rome every time? Make sure you don’t just put those destinations on your bucket list, but actually take the time and visit them this Summer.

Apart from Jajce, I’ve chosen three more charming “treasures” that I would like to share with you. And if you wish to explore the full list of undiscovered destinations all around Europe, check out the #TopHiddenTreasures hashtag on social media.

Here are my picks:

1. Azerbaijan – Sheki

The town of Sheki, truly worth the 300km, six-hour bus ride from Baku, is rich in Islamic architecture, Silk Road history and great food. Be sure to visit the Palace of the Sheki Khans (Khansarai). Those looking for outdoor activities can enjoy treks into unspoiled mountain landscapes. With reasonable prices (accommodation can be found for €11 and a meal out is also approx. €11), Azerbaijan is fast becoming a popular destination, and budget airlines fly in several times a week. Book soon to see this country in its authentic, unspoiled form!

2. Italy – Calabria

Ask an Italian where the best beaches are, and they will probably point to Calabria. Surprisingly, this is not one of Italy’s top tourist destinations. Considered the Caribbean of Europe due to its amazing beaches and stunning colorful coastline, the picturesque villages in the surrounding high grounds offer unique adventures. Prices are reasonable and lower than those found in Rome, Venice, or Tuscany. A restaurant meal will cost approx. €25, and accommodation can be found for under €30. How come I didn’t know before about this gem from the Top Hidden Treasures selection??

3. Island – Grundarfjördur

Grundarfjörður is not the most known town in Iceland, but the nearby spectacular Kirkjuffel Mountain is a much-loved landmark for photographers and filmmakers. The area offers breathtaking waterfalls, great hiking trails, and exciting wildlife. During the long summer days, you can go deep-sea fishing, look for puffins and, if you’re lucky, you might even spot whales. You won’t regret visiting, but be prepared to pay approx. €50 for eating out, and nearly €80 for accommodation.

Aren’t they absolutely WUNDERBAR?

Talk soon, darlings!
